Is Sports Good For Kids?
Sports, to most of us, are just for fun and relaxation. However, the sport can provide many benefits to people who engage in it on a regular basis. One of the more obvious benefits of playing sports is that of physical fitness. This is especially important for people who participate in contact sports, as well as people of all ages who enjoy sports, are they competitive or recreational.
In any sport, participating and excelling at it requires physical power, speed, endurance and the ability to rotate the joints quickly and efficiently. In some sports like rugby, for example, several competitors may engage in the sport simultaneously, each trying to surpass the other in the run or in the tackle; in others, only two teams will play, both using special equipment designed to withstand the impact of several collisions. The result is that even relatively small differences in physical power can result in massive differences in results, which is why almost every sport uses some type of betting, in order to determine who is the winner, and how the points are awarded. While the mechanics of the game may not always be “visible”, when viewing a live match or even an online video feed, spectators have a clear sense of the intensity of the contest and are able to appreciate the skills and actions of the athletes and the trainers more clearly.
Another benefit of participation in sports is that it encourages healthy lifestyles and good overall physical health. Many young people begin to take part in athletics because they become frustrated by less physical activities, or by the fact that they do not wish to accept that their schoolwork or other extracurricular activities will not bring them the same levels of success that they might otherwise expect. By participating in athletics, young people are learning the basic skills of self-discipline, motivation and the commitment to a particular goal. In addition, athletes learn how to improve their own fitness and strength. In addition, they learn to give their best shot at achieving their goals, and to rise above the challenges that inevitably arise during athletic competition.
One of the most important aspects of sports, especially for children, is motor skills. For this reason, many sports teach basic skills and motor skills, such as jumping, throwing, catching and running. In addition, sports help develop emotional intelligence, since the competitive nature of most sports encourages a sense of striving to excel beyond one’s level of physical ability. For instance, when competing in a baseball game, the competitor needs to be able to hit a baseball with a certain degree of accuracy and velocity in order to win the game. Similarly, while competing cheerfully in football, the cheerleader needs to be able to effectively and quickly pump up the crowd and support his team. The development of these skills helps cultivate confidence and teamwork in children and parents alike.
Although sports can provide a great deal of physical activity and amusement, they also provide the opportunity to learn about a variety of interests and philosophies. As we have seen, the benefits of sports participation extend beyond the obvious benefits to the athlete and participant. One main article cited in the USA Today article “Does Self-Esteem Participation in Sports Has Any Benefits?” examines the development of self-esteem and sports participation as it relates to various levels of education. Interestingly, the article points out that there is a relationship between sports participation and lower student discipline and school violence. It is further suggested that sports may be an excellent avenue for introducing children to discipline and ethics.
Finally, we pointed out that sports can be an excellent method to help build self-confidence and physical fitness. A strong physical fitness foundation is important to any student, and the athletics that a student participates in will determine how well that student exercises. Additionally, while the student is participating in the athletic event, he or she will be challenged to work to perfection, which is a critical element of building personal fitness and strength. In this way, athletics can serve as a great outlet for a young person to work on building their self-esteem, improve their physical fitness, and become more disciplined in the classroom. Indeed, there are numerous benefits to participating in athletics.
